Re-Enactments is a multimedia performance art piece featuring adults with dementia as actors, performed for small, socially distanced audiences funded by a grant from Charlotte Street Foundation “art where you’re at.” Vering sought to work with the actors to come up with moments from our lives that could be “re-enacted”-such as someone doing the dance to “footloose” on their daughter’s bed to cheer them up and someone’s mom getting really angry because her daughter cut up fruit the wrong way. The performance is a psychedelic musical featuring Vering re-enacting events alongside the actors with dementia via video projection.
The first performance in the series was August 4th, 2020 in a storage shed behind Life Care Center nursing facility in Kansas City, KS for the residents who sat outside 10 feet apart with masks on. The next performance was "drive-in" style on October 2nd, 2020 at a church parking lot in Leawood, KS attended by the adults with dementia whom Vering collaborated with to make the piece and their families. These adults all used to attend Jeanne’s Place, a social engagement day program for adults with dementia until the program was shut down due to covid. The final performance was October 20th at Our Place Senior Care, a small memory care facility in Shawnee, KS.
Vering is both a performance artist and hospice expressive arts therapist. She wanted to perform for residents of nursing facilities because “They have been hit the hardest in the covid epidemic. Not only with morbidity (40% total of all deaths), but in terms of restrictions on their movement, restrictions on their ability to see loved ones and sometimes even restrictions on visits from their hospice nurse or chaplain.” Vering hopes the performances celebrated the strengths of her collaborators with dementia, provided an escape from reality for facility residents in the audience, and to inspired other nursing facility staff to utilize drama therapy techniques.
